The Hong Kong General Chamber of Young Entrepreneurs (HKGCYE) is being launched this month, by young entrepreneurs, for young entrepreneurs. Hong Kong Odyssey of the Mind 2015 Local Competitions: six winning teams go forward to World Finals
St Paul's Co-educational College Win Local OMP 2015
Well done to all the winners at the annual Hong Kong Odyssey of the Mind Competitions on 28 and 29 March. The winning teams were from Ho Fung College, sponsored by Sik Sik Yuen, Buddhist Wong Wan Tin College, Po Leung Kuk Grandmont Primary School, Queen's College, St Paul's Co-educational College and Po Leung Kuk Lo Kit Sing (1983) College. They will go in May to compete with top-finishers from around the world at the World Finals in Michigan. The local event had loyal support from venue sponsors, Hong Kong Design Institute and Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (Lee Wai Lee) in Tseung Kwan O. The Officiating Guests at the opening ceremony in the Design Boulevard were Mrs Marion Lai Chan Chi-kuen, JP, Mr Wallace Lam and Dr Hubert Chan, JP.

Helios (赤道): Charity Gala Film Premiere
With Media Asia (HK) Ltd, HKFYG is hosting a Charity Gala Premiere of Helios (赤道), the upcoming Hong Kong crime thriller film directed by Longman Leung (梁樂民) and Sunny Luk (陸劍青). This action-packed movie is about thwarting a terrorist attack master-minded by international criminal, Helios. The star-studded cast from HK, mainland China, Taiwan and South Korea, includes Jacky Cheung (張學友), Nick Cheung (張家輝), Shawn Yue (余文樂), Ji Jin-hee (池珍熙), Choi Si-won (崔始源), Wang Xueqi (王學圻) and Chang Chen (張震). Proceeds will support Federation services for youth, especially those in need.

Guinness World Record display of recycled paper horses: a must see!
Ten Thousand Galloping Horses, United With One Heart
Over 10,000 eco-horse sculptures went on display last week with the goal of setting a new Guinness World Record for "the largest display of recycled paper sculptures". This installation art and education project, entitled Ten Thousand Galloping Horses, United With One Heart was organized by HKFYG with The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust as major sponsor. Over 15,000 young people visited the venue from 2-5 April and Mrs Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, GBS, JP, Chief Secretary for Administration, HKSARG, and Mr Anthony WK Chow, SBS, JP, Deputy Chairman of The Hong Kong Jockey Club officiated at the opening ceremony on 2 April.

HSBC Financial Dialogue Series 2015
Monday 30 March marked the second event in this annual series of dialogues where students meet leaders and experts from the finance sector. Speakers were The Hon John Tsang, GBM, JP, Financial Secretary, HKSARG, and Mr Peter Wong Tung Shun, JP, Group Managing Director, HSBC Group, Deputy Chairman and Chief Executive, The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Ltd. Mr George S K Leung, Advisor, Asia Pacific, The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Ltd, was the moderator and the topic discussed was Investing in Community Needs in the Tide of Corporate Responsibility. About 200 business students nominated by university deans took part in discussions. They were encouraged to develop a wider view of the world while learning about the functions and operations of HSBC.

M21 offers free IT training with Microsoft funding for
low-income youth

The goals of this programme are to provide free IT training for underprivileged young people, to give them career advice and job skills with IT internships. This will increase the number of qualified graduates for the IT sector. About 500 students at secondary school and VTC/associate degree students are taking part in this second phase of the Innovative Employment Training for Youth with funding provided by Microsoft Hong Kong Ltd.

Verdant Foundation donates story books for kindergarten pupils
With this new donation from The Verdant Foundation, the HKFYG KK Cheng Kindergarten will be able to afford many more new books to enhance English learning language as well as more support from its native English teacher (NET). The extra hours spent by the NET at the school mean there will be more activities such as phonics, storytelling and vocabulary building, as well as co-teaching to improve staff skills in planning and delivering English lessons.

HSBC Youth Business Awards selection now underway
As part of a collaborative effort with HSBC to support entrepreneurs in Hong Kong, the HSBC Youth Business Award gives recognition for outstanding enterprise. Cash prizes totalling HK$190,000 are offered with a top prize this year of HK$100,000. All winners will also attend a PR Strategy Workshop organized by iMoney on media and promotional strategy.

What do youth think of their teachers? HKFYG Youth Research Centre
gets the answers

A survey on youth's perceptions of teachers conducted last autumn revealed that a large majority of students respect and trust their teachers (92.5% and 84.4% respectively). Nearly three-quarters thought of their school teachers as role models and felt loved and cared for by them. They said the 3 main criteria for good teaching were ability to lecture, a caring attitude with pupils, and staying good-humoured. Students had come across 3 or 4 teachers like this on average.
